Hindsight is 20/20

All homeowners have some type of insurance to cover their home and contents should they ever experience a loss.  However; many take out the policy and think no more about it.  You have done what you should to cover yourself right?  Wrong.  If you were to experience a residential fire that resulted in a complete loss, would you be able to remember every item that was in your home?  In hindsight, you would realize that documenting your contents before the loss would have made the recovery process much smoother.  Keeping an accurate inventory of your belongings can save you time, headache, hassle and monetary loss.  It is also important to check what type of coverage you have when it comes to replacement costs.  All policies have some form of replacement coverage, but there is a key difference. Many cover contents at actual cash value, while some cover only for current market price less depreciation.  After you have created your home log inventory, contact your insurance agent to make sure you are covered.  And of course, when it comes to creating your inventory, there's an app for that!  CLICK HERE to see the top 10 apps for creating a home inventory log. At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we have seen the fire restoration process from beginning to end and we want to help you be better prepared for the unexpected.  We can’t promise you that it will never happen, but we can help you be ready if it does!

How a Storm Gets Its Name

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

If you have lived along the Gulf Coast for a while, you are all too familiar with Hurricane Season.  Each year, from June 1st through November 30th, we anxiously tune in to the weather each night to see what may have formed out there in the “big blue” and if the currents are steering it in our direction.   As they develop from depressions to storms, they move on from numbers and are christened with a name.  Have you ever wondered how those names are chosen?  Are they just random titles drawn from a hat by the folks at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)?  Well, for starters, the answer is no.  Hurricanes are actually named by the World Meteorological Organization.  Since 1979, they have used six lists of names (both male and female) in rotation.  The lists all contain a name beginning with each letter of the alphabet, except for Q, U and Z. This means the same list is reused every 6 years.  So, depending on your age, if you haven’t seen your name on the list, there will never be a storm bearing your moniker.  No matter what name the storm bears, SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile will always be ready to roll out and assist our community should we ever experience a hurricane or other catastrophic event!

It's About Time

12/13/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile we pride ourselves on our fast and efficient response times.  When it comes to water damage, time is of the essence.  Quickly beginning the mitigation process can not only minimize costs and salvage important items, it can also prevent additional damage.  One of the most common complications that can arise from a water damage not being properly and quickly mitigated is mold.  It can take as little as 24 hours for mold growth to take root in a humid, moist environment.  It is not only critical to begin work as soon as possible after a water loss, but it is important to finish the drying process completely.  Any residual moisture left behind could also feed the beast that is mold.  If you experience water damage call the experts at SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile to make sure you never have to worry about secondary damage!  We are available 24/7 to help make it Like it never even happened.®

Building a Fortified Home Along the Gulf Coast

8/28/2018 (Permalink)

Building a Fortified Home

Building a new home can be a big undertaking.  There are so many variables to consider and if you have never built a home before, you may not know where to start.  One of the first things that you may want to consider is what level of fortification you want to include in your home to protect it from catastrophic events.  Living here along the Gulf Coast, we know that hurricanes are an unavoidable peril.  How your home is constructed may mean the difference between minor damage and complete devastation.  There are now universal building codes that may make your home more resilient in the face of a storm.  You may even receive discounts on your homeowner’s insurance based on which construction standard you choose for your new home. Building codes may vary from state to state and this can lead to inconsistencies in the ability of a structure to bear the force of a major storm.  In 2010, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) developed the FORTIFIED Home to create a uniform, hazard specific standard to alleviate these discrepancies and make new homes more resistant to severe weather.  The program includes three levels for homeowners to choose from based on their needs.  The Gold standard ties the entire house together by tying the roof to the walls, the walls to the floor and the floor to the foundation.  This means the entire structure functions as one seamless system.  Silver requires additional fortification to the roofing system and the windows.  The Bronze level addresses only the roof.  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we have seen first hand the devastation that a natural disaster can bring with it.  If you are building a home, we would encourage you to do your research and make sure your home has the most protection possible.  You can’t predict the future, but you can be ready!  If you want to learn more about the FORTIFIED Home, CLICK HERE To visit the IBHS website.

Are you Covered?

Storm Damage Are you Covered? Homeowners insurance and SERVPRO

Are You Covered?

When it comes to your homeowner’s insurance policy sometimes it is hard to know exactly what to look for when checking your coverage.  Many times, the average consumer doesn’t consider all the variables and the multitude of “what if’s” that could occur and cause damage to their home.  SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile wants to help you make sure you are covered BEFORE disaster strikes.  One of the most common areas of gaps in coverage can occur in water loss situations.  An overwhelming majority of policies do not provide coverage for flood damage that is incurred from “rising water”.   This term is how most insurance companies will differentiate whether water damage is covered under the policy.  Rising water would be determined to be flood damage and most often only covered if you bought an additional flood policy.  Other water damage that would be covered would be water that filled the home as the result of a collapsed roof, broken windows etc.  If you aren’t sure of what your homeowner’s policy covers, we strongly encourage you to contact your agent to day and ask questions.

Dryer Vent Cleaning with SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile

Dryer Vent Cleaning (Commercial)

You do everything you can to prevent a fire in your business.  You have developed emergency plans, installed sprinklers, developed protocols for electrical and cooking systems, but what about your dryer vents? As a premier provider of commercial fire restoration services, SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile has seen fires from a wide range of sources.  Fires caused from clogged dryer vents are more common than you may think.  Especially in commercial buildings that use dryers on a regular basis.  How do clogged dryer vents cause fires?  The lint trapped in vents can cause limited air flow, making the dryer work harder than usual.  This causes the dryer to get hotter than usual, which makes it overheat and catch fire.  The good news is that annual dryer vent cleanings can prevent this from occurring.  If you haven’t cleaned your dryer vents recently contact SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile at 251-343-0534.  We can set up a cleaning and put you on a preventative maintenance schedule that will protect you and your business.

Protecting Your Investment (Storm)

Becoming a homeowner is a great source of pride.  It is a goal that everyone looks forward too and it is inevitably the biggest investment you will ever make.  Protecting your home is always a top priority.  Where do you begin to protect your home when devastating weather is on the horizon?  Hurricanes are the biggest threat we face here in the coastal areas of Alabama.  We have been lucky in recent years, but at some point, our luck will run out.  What can you do to steel your residence for the storm?  First off, if you are building a new home, be sure to research the best building plans for hurricane safety.  You may be able to add optional items such as hurricane straps.  Doing this research before you begin building may also help lower your homeowner’s insurance premiums based on the options you choose to add to your home.  If you have an existing home, there are things you can do when faced with an impending storm. You can add hurricane shutters as a permanent solution, or simply board up to protect your windows when a storm is approaching.  Keeping trees trimmed is also an important step to take, although you would want to do this on a regular basis well before the storm is approaching.  Also, make sure to take an accurate inventory of your belongings.  If your home and possessions are damaged during a storm you will need this to report to your insurance company.  Even the most well-prepared home may feel the effects of Mother Nature if a storm situation does occur.  If you are ever affected by a natural disaster, we want you to know that SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile is always Here to Help!

Mold Tips (Mold)

No matter how diligent you are, or how many precautions you take mold may still find its way into your home.  Finding mold can be alarming and you may want to start tackling the issue right away; however, mold remediation is not a DIY task.  If you find mold in your home, there are steps you can take to prevent further damage.  First, you should stay out of affected areas. Although the terrifying stories of “killer” mold are myths, mold can cause adverse side effects.  Disturbed mold spores can cause breathing issues, coughing, wheezing or irritation to the throat, eyes and skin.  Some people are especially sensitive to mold and can have more severe reactions than others.  Next, turn off the HVAC systems and fans to prevent the distribution of mold spores to other areas of your home.  Your next step should be to contact SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile to schedule an inspection with one of our IICRC certified mold remediation specialists.  Our experts have undergone extensive training to evaluate your mold issues and develop a customized treatment plan catered to your unique situation.  If you suspect a mold issue in your home, contact us at 251-343-0534 to schedule your inspection.

Protecting Your Business (Commercial)

Your business is what motivates you to get up each day.  It is more than a source of income for you and your employees, it is a source of pride.  You have worked hard to build it and just as hard to protect it. From risk management services, to insurance and even security systems, you have made sure everything is in place to prevent shutdown.  But have you? Even small disasters such as a water loss from a busted pipe may shut you down for days, resulting in lost productivity and revenue.  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we want to help you protect your business and keep it running if the unforeseen should strike. Knowledge is key to preparation. Here are some things to think about:

  • Maintenance - sheck sewer drains, floor drains and water collect systems regularly

  • Backflow valves - make sure they are tested and maintained annually

  • Generator fuel tanks - make sure they are in elevated areas that aren’t subject to flooding

  • Sprinkler systems - should be equipped with flow systems and inspected annually

  • Water mains - label all branches to allow for isolation and include a valve diagram chart

Our Emergency Ready Plan (ERP) is a free service we off that can help you check many of these off your planning list.  Call us today at 251-343-0534 to schedule a consultation.

All About Soot

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

All About Soot (Fire)

As defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, soot is “a black powder formed when something is burned : the very fine powder that colors smoke”.   Most of us know what soot is, but did you know there are various types of soot based on what has burned and what started the fire?  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we clean each item based on its material composition as well as the type of soot. In order to provide the best results, you must determine the type of soot before you begin the cleaning process to ensure the proper methods are used.  Contents may be affected by:

  • Wet soot - results from an oxygen-starved, low smoldering fire with high moisture levels.

  • Dry soot - caused by high-heat, high oxygen fires with natural materials.

  • Protein soot - typically a fire in the kitchen caused by overcooked meat.  This is usually hard to see but covers all surfaces with a sticky, hard to remove residue.

When it comes to cleaning up after a fire, even a small one, it is a job best left up to the experts.  Our team has undergone extensive training to understand how each type of fire can leave behind its own calling card.  We have the tools and knowledge to make it "Like it never even happened.®"

A Few "Alarming" Facts

A Few “Alarming” Facts (Fire)

After the fire is out and we step in, the team here at SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile County  takes great pride in being able to help our clients get their lives back on track as quickly as possible.  However; we also take great pride in sharing the knowledge we have gained to educate our community members on how to lessen the impact of unforeseen disasters.  We can’t ensure that you will never experience a fire or water loss, but we can help you safeguard your family and your property as much as possible. Safety, prevention and planning are key to minimizing property loss and injury.  One of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your family is by having properly working smoke alarms. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):

  • 3 out of 5 deaths in a residential fire occurred in homes without properly working smoke alarms.

  • No smoke alarms were present in nearly 2 out of 5 home deaths.

  • In homes with smoke alarms that did not operate properly, nearly half of those malfunctions were due to missing batteries or disconnected wires.

  • One-quarter of smoke alarms failures were due to dead batteries.

The NFPA recommends that you test your smoke alarms monthly.  Make sure your smoke alarms are on a connected system so that if one sounds, they all go off.  It is also recommended that you replace your smoke alarms with new ones every 10 years.

However; even the experts can learn something new each day.  We like to stress the importance of continued growth and learning to our team members. In that spirit, we went on the hunt for some of the most interesting facts regarding mold that we could find.  Did you know…

  • Mold isn’t so happy about happy meals....mold will not grow on a McDonald’s hamburger.

  • Mold damage can cause more than half a trillion dollars per year.

iCat Inventory System

When you experience a fire in your home it can be a very traumatic situation.  The stress is often intensified when you have to move out all of your belongings in order to begin the recovery process.  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, our goal is to make this process as easy as possible for you. One way in which we do that is through our iCat inventory system.  This electronic inventory tool allows us to catalog each item we pack up and note the location to ensure accurate tracking of your contents. What To Do Until Help Arrives

Water Damage What To Do Until Help Arrives We are here for you 24/7!

What to do until help arrives…

Despite your best efforts to learn and implement precautions to prevent a water damage, it is often out of your control.  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we often talk about preparedness tips to prevent or minimize the impacts of a water loss situation.  But we also want you to understand the best ways to reduce the impacts after the damage has occurred. Before doing anything you need to make sure that the home is safe to enter.  After a catastrophic flood event there may be electrical hazards, structural safety issues and contaminated water present. However, after a water loss due to burst pipes, leaking water lines or other household causes, your first step would be to locate and stop the source of the loss. Wipe wood, furniture or other belongings to remove excess water.  If possible, place styrofoam or wooden blocks underneath furniture to prevent it from sitting in standing water. Relocated smaller contents to an unaffected area of the house. Move any rugs or floor coverings as well. At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we guarantee that a technician will be on-site beginning work within 3 hours. Until help arrives, utilizing these tips could help you minimize costs and save contents after a water loss.

Crawfish for a Cause 2018

Crawfish for a Cause 2018

The only thing hotter than this year’s Crawfish for a Cause event were the Mudbugs themselves.  DIP Seafood was onsite in their decked out crawfish kitchen on wheels, cooking up more than 1800 pounds of the delicious delicacy for more than 350 of our “closest” family and friends to enjoy!  We want to thank everyone who came out to support the event this year. Thanks to you and our local sponsors, we were able to raise over $10,000 to support the USA Medical Center’s Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center.  The money is still rolling in, so we will have a final count on down the road but we just wanted to let you all know what an awesome job our community did supporting this event. We are so proud to have another successful year under our belts and look forward to next year’s event being even bigger and better!  Don’t forget to like our Facebook page to keep up with all of the news and important dates as we look forward to 2019.

Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Preparedness

The flowers are blooming, the air is thick with humidity and pollen and school is just about to be out for the summer, you know what that means???  Well for us here along the Gulf Coast, it means it’s time to start thinking about hurricane season! Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30, 2018, with the height of the season falling around the middle of September.  Even though our minds are more focused on barbecues and beach trips, it is best to go ahead and create a plan so that you are fully prepared if Mother Nature turns her fury our way. If you aren’t sure of where to begin, there are lots of resources out there to help you find your way.  A great place to start is Ready.gov and RedCross.org.  These sites will help you create a supply list, communication plans and even design an evacuation plan should it be necessary.  If you own a business, you can contact SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile to create an Emergency Ready Profile. This is a free service that compiles vital emergency information, photographs of crucial shutoffs, and contacts into an easily accessible app form.  Residential customers, you can create your own ERP by visiting clicking here.  Having a plan in place can help you minimize damage and recovery times!

Hide and Seek

Mold growth in your home can bring with it a wide array of problems and should be remediated as quickly as possible by a certified professional.  But what happens when you suspect their might be a problem but you can’t locate the culprit. Often homeowners will begin to think there may be mold in their home due to increased allergy, asthma issues, or just a distinctive “musty” smell.  The problem is that mold is a sneaky adversary and often sneaks in to hidden spaces. Most often it is found hiding out behind appliances, under cabinets, in the walls, behind baseboards and in crawl spaces, just to name a few. At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile our team members have the training and experience to effectively locate Mold, wherever it may be hiding.   If you suspect you may have a mold issue in your home, contact us at 251-653-9127 to schedule an inspection.

After the fire is out and the smoke is cleared the real work is ready to begin.  At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we are there to help you every step of the way.  Everyone thinks about the clean up and restoration that is involved after a fire, but the process is much more involved than you may expect.  It is not just the structure that is affected but also personal belongings as well.  The first step after a serious fire, is to remove all of the contents and transport them to our climate controlled warehouse.  We use a revolutionary new software system called iCat to electronically photograph and catalogue each item as we pack it up.  This system means that we know exactly where each item was located in the house and what box it was packed in to.  Not only does this allow us to place the items back in the corresponding rooms when we bring it back, but it also allows us to quickly locate anything you may need during the cleanup process.  You even have access to the inventory log via the online site while it is being cleaned and stored at our facility.  This is just one more way that SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile is committed to providing the best service to our clients!

Each year we host Crawfish for a Cause to raise funds for this amazing facility. This family friendly event offers all you can eat crawfish and beverages, live music and a silent auction. Emergency Tips on a Home Fire

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

Your home is a place to relax, play and enjoy spending time with your family. Our home is also where we spend a good bit of our time, which is why we are going to talk about some simple steps to minimize the risk of getting hurt. Below are some helpful tips to prevent serious injuries that are often completely preventable.

What to Do in case of fire or smoke damage:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Blow or brush vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpets.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpeted traffic areas.
  • Clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances with light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What Not to Do in case of fire or smoke damage:

  • Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO professional.
  • Do not attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting your local SERVPRO professional.
  • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV’s, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Do not use any canned or packaged foods or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water- they may have been contaminated.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be wet or damaged.
  • Do not send fabrics to an ordinary dry cleaner- improper cleaning may set the smoke odor

Is Your Property Winter Ready?

12/27/2017 (Permalink)

Rainy and cold weather in the South can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not properly prepared. This year has been a record year for rainy weather.  Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, or sometimes ice all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper working order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, that can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazer potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install matts or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask your SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile Professionals about completing an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

When winter weather strikes, call your SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile Professionals to strike back.  We can provide anything from temporary heat, desiccant dehumidification to water damage cleanup and repair.

Where Mold Can Hide

12/27/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Where Mold Can Hide Hidden Mold in Theodore, AL

Mold can occur anywhere in a home but mainly is concentrated to areas where moisture is present. These moisture areas are common to the bathroom, crawl spaces (Common in Mid Town Mobile, AL) and in basements. Mold can cause respiratory problems and should be removed if found as soon as possible. Most restoration companies only do mold inspections if the mold is visible, an industrial hygienist would come in and search for traces of mold that are not visible.

One of the first places mold can collect and you may not think to check is under the refrigerator. Under the fridge tends to collect moisture and dirt which can cause a breeding ground for bacteria and mold.

Another place is the AC unit. AC units are known to collect debris, dust and moisture from the air, which can lead to mold spores.

Mold can even grow in or around a washing machine or its parts. Moisture and lint can cause a presence of mold spores.

Other area in the house include anywhere moisture and dirt may form such as window corners. If you suspect mold, call SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile and we will make it "Like it never even happened".

Mold Damage and High Humidity in your Home

12/27/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold Damage and High Humidity in your Home Mold Everywhere in Mobile, AL

Unintended consequences of modern building methods used in areas like Mobile, AL may include damage to structures and contents. Tightly sealed windows, doors, and other building materials help conserve energy. Lack of adequate ventilation in homes built since the 1970s lets moisture build, contributing to mold growth. Once established, the mold colonies need professional remediation.

If you notice an “off” or musty smell in your Mobile, AL home, would it surprise you that mold damage could be the cause? In our climate, both building materials and the systems we use to heat and cool must handle extremes of temperature and humidity. Moisture levels and temperatures that get out of balance support the growth of fungal colonies out of the many mold spores always in our environment. Standard cleaning methods are inadequate to control a mold infestation. Our expert mold remediation crews contain and remove mold growth, and then sanitize the affected areas to inhibit future outbreaks.

Molds need moisture to grow, and SERVPRO knows a remediation job is not complete until the source is found and eliminated. In Mobile, AL high humidity levels can be the culprit. When ambient humidity rises above 60 percent, some species of mold absorb that airborne moisture and multiply. During our summers, the air is often sticky, and if air conditioning or dehumidifiers are not used consistently, mold takes advantage of the water vapor.

Winters also pose the risk of high interior humidity as our HVAC systems or freestanding humidifiers run constantly to battle the dryness of the heated air. Parents run humidifiers when children struggle with allergies or upper respiratory infections, often making things worse if mold develops and its byproducts irritate susceptible individuals. Consult a healthcare provider if you're worried about a mold and health status connection.

SERVPRO crew members test for humidity levels and seek for other hidden pockets of moisture when we respond to a mold event. All technicians work with you to reduce home humidity to safe levels between 30 and 50 percent. Calibration of the humidifier in your HVAC system may be a solution, and if mold has developed in the ductwork, we offer cleaning, sealing, and disinfection of those spaces.

The reduction or elimination of other humidifying events also helps, including running bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and checking dryer vents for obstructions. SERVPRO employees train in advanced water removal and drying techniques. Should our meters and scanners reveal water behind a wall, beneath a cabinet, or in any other area we deal with it. Water issues must be resolved to avoid mold problems in the future. SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile has the experience and training to remediate mold damage in your home. One call to us will start a development of a plan to assess the issues and address the problem professionally.

9 Ways To Prevent Holiday Fires in Mobile, AL

Fire Damage 9 Ways To Prevent Holiday Fires in Mobile, AL Dangers of Christmas Tree Fires in Mobile, AL

Holidays are here with weeks of celebrating with family and loved ones. But with celebrations comes potential dangers. Here is a great article I found by Anglea Nelson.

More home fires happen in the winter than any other time of year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. And it’s not hard to figure out why — those chilly months are when we turn on our heating systems, use space heaters or light a fire in the fireplace.

Winter also brings the holidays. So make sure the only sparks that fly this season are between you and your sweetie as you smooch under the mistletoe. Here are nine tips from the safety experts at UL for preventing a house fire.

Related: How to Survive a Fire

  1. Keep an eye on candles.Keep lighted candles away from items that might catch fire, including curtains, table runners, fresh garlands and wrapped gifts. Blow out the candle before you leave the room.
  2. Avoid stove distractions.Cooking is the number one cause of house fires. If you leave the kitchen while something's on the stove or in the oven, carry an oven mitt with you as a reminder to go back and tend to the food. Keep children and pets away from the cooking area. Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves as you stir and simmer, since loose clothing can dangle onto burners and catch fire.

If you have a fire on the stove, turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid. Never use water, baking soda or flour to extinguish a grease fire. Also, never carry the pan outside, as you could spread flames throughout the house in the process.

If your oven catches fire, turn off the heat, and keep the oven door closed.

Related: Quiz: Are You Prepared for a House Fire?

  1. Water your Christmas tree.If you have a real tree, letting it get dry is a fire hazard. A tree needs water once or twice a day for the first few weeks. If you have a fake tree, read the label. It should say “fire resistant.” But that doesn’t mean fireproof. Don’t place any kind of tree near a fireplace, radiator or lit candles.
  2. Have fire extinguishers in your house. You should have one ABC fire extinguisher on each level of your home, near the exit, and in your garage if you have one. It's a good idea to have smaller, supplemental fire extinguishers for your kitchen and car, says John Drengenberg, consumer safety director for UL.
  3. Use space heaters wisely.Keepspace heaters three feet away from combustibles such as curtains, clothing, bedding and furniture. Unplug the appliance when you’re not using it.
  4. Install and test smoke alarms.Install at least one UL-listed smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement andinside and outside every sleeping areaTest smoke alarms at least once a monthand replace the batteries twice a year.
  5. Get yourfireplace, chimney and wood stove inspected. These should be cleaned and inspected by a professional every year. Your fireplace should have a sturdy screen to prevent embers from flying into the room.
  6. Have your furnace inspected.Call a professional toservice your furnace once a year. You can replace or clean the furnace filter yourself — the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute recommends doing it three times a year. Keep combustible materials, such as paint thinners, gasoline or kerosene, away from the furnace.
  7. Keep flammables away from the fireplace.Make sure garland, wrapped presents and even stockings are far enough away that they won't catch fire if a spark flies. If you want to hang stockings over the fireplace mantel, move them when you light a fire.

5 Quick Tips on Being Prepared Before Water Strikes

12/27/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage 5 Quick Tips on Being Prepared Before Water Strikes Office Building Water Loss in Mobile , AL

Consider these 5 tips to better prepare. Water Damage can be traumatic, but being prepared can put you at ease.

  1. Look up your insurance coverage. Most renter’s or homeowners insurance policies don’t cover flooding, or even a sewer backup. Find out what coverage you have.
  2. Keep a record of all of your belongings. Take photos and keep copies of a receipt or other documents for the more valuable items. Store a copy of these records online or at another location. If you do experience water damage, it can be easy to forget about certain items.
  3. Take steps to limit the risk of water damage within your home by checking pipes frequently and paying attention to any indicators of water damage, such as dripping sounds in the walls, dark spots on the ceiling, or significant change in your water bill.
  4. Set up your home so that it is less at risk of damage from heavy rains or flooding by ensuring that your roof is sound. Make sure there are no cracks in the foundation. Check that the landscaping around your home is sloped to direct water away from your foundation, rather than toward it.
  5. Find an expert you can count on. Water damage can be overwhelming, and you don’t want to be desperately searching for a water restoration expert at 3 AM when the pipes break.

Can you Spot Water Damage?

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Can you Spot Water Damage? Thermal Imaging can detect Unseen Water Leakage

In general, a house is one of the biggest investments you will make in your lifetime. In order to protect that investment, you should vigilantly look out for household problems and address them before they worsen.

One such dreaded homeowner issue is water damage. If left unattended, residential water damage can detrimentally impact the structure or spawn other complications, including mold that poses a health risk to inhabitants. Here are several methods for detecting water damage within your house.

1. Check the Floors
No matter what kind of flooring you have, it will manifest signs of water damage. For tile and wood, look for cracked, buckling or warped flooring. When it comes to carpet, be wary of damp spots, gradual rises, soft spots or the smell of mold and dampness.

2. Look for Stains
Water stains on the floor around the bathtub, toilet or sink, as well as stains on ceilings and walls, are some of the most obvious signs of water damage. Unusual stains could indicate there is a leaky pipe or drain inside the wall. Cracks in the drywall or areas that appear swollen and are soft to touch also may signify trouble. Peeling paint is another sign of loose water within wall spaces. As the drywall gets saturated, paint can lose adhesion.

3. Inspect Outside
Observe the exterior of your house. What you want to look for are pools of standing water that can indicate poor drainage in the yard, gutter spouts that aren’t transporting water far enough from the house or leaky rain gutters. Any of those issues could threaten the foundation of your house. Additionally, common signs of water damage on the roof may include pools of water; cracked, curled or missing shingles; or broken flashing.

4. Watch for Rust and Mold
Inspect your water heater and check for rust on the tank or damp spots on the floor. A rusted tank could indicate a slow leak. Additionally, corrosion around pipe connections could be caused by water seepage. Visual signs of active mold growth mean moisture is contacting microscopic mold spores, often in the nooks and crannies of your home. Finally, don’t rely solely on sight. When water stagnates, mold and bacteria can grow, producing a musty, unpleasant smell.

At SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile, we feel blessed to be a part of the national network that makes up our Disaster Recovery Team. It has been our honor to serve with SERVPRO’s from around the country to help so many in the wake of devastating natural disasters. Since joining the Disaster Recovery network, we have been able to assist in cleanup efforts following Hurricane Sandy and the floods in Baton Rouge, Houston and Kansas. We know that what we do means so much to those that we help, but it means so much more to us. The human connections we have made during these situations are permanently etched in our memories and our hearts. These people, who are going through the hardest of times have given us beautiful reminders of the strength of the human spirit. We were truly humbled by the tenacity, the courage and the optimism that we witnessed. Being part of storm team has helped us more than those that were in need. It has been a great reminder of what matters most!

The Costly Effects of a Fire

8/13/2017 (Permalink)

Fire is one of our most valuable resources.  We use it to cook our food, heat our homes, power our world and so much more.  However, when it comes to our homes, fire can also be one of our worst enemies.  Each year, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), nearly 358,300 home-owners experience a fire.  Nearly, $10.3 billion in property damage and 3,280 deaths were due to residential fires in 2015 alone.  Residential fires accounted for three-quarters of all structure fires during 2015.  At SERVPRO of Mobile Southwest, we have seen first-hand the devastation that fire can cause.  We take pride in helping customers get their lives back on track in the wake of a disaster; but our wish is that they never go through that experience.  Knowledge is power when it comes to prevention and we want to share information that can help you protect your home.  Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires followed by home heating.  When cooking be sure to never leave anything on or near the stove and use caution when frying.  If you have central heating, make sure to have ducts cleaned regularly to prevent buildup and reduce the chance of fire. Dryer vents should also be cleaned annually.  Clothes dryers cause an estimated 2,900 fires each year, causing over $35 million in property losses. Call us today to schedule your HVAC or dryer vent cleaning and protect your home.

Minimizing Secondary Soot and Smoke Damages

7/26/2017 (Permalink)

Minimizing Secondary Soot and Smoke Damages

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Brush vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpet.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances with light coating of Vaseline or oil.
  • Wash house plants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

DON’T:

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV sets, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water. They may have been contaminated.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
  • Don't send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

Even if your property didn’t suffer fire damage, there may be soot particles and residues left to clean up. If cleaned improperly, the odor and effects can linger long after the fire has been extinguished. From the structure itself to the contents inside SERVPRO of Mobile Southwest utilizes the latest technology and training to, make it "Like it never even happened."

Why We Don't Test For Mold?

7/17/2017 (Permalink)

Most people think a company that remediates mold would also do the testing of mold? Here at SERVPRO of Mobile Southwest, we do not, and this is why:

Given we are a Cleaning and Remediation Company, we have determined being a certified Industrial Hygienist (IH) is veering too far from our profession.  Mold remediation and mold testing require different sets of training, certifications, and professional equipment. For remediation purposes, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) offers a course called Applied Microbial Remediation Technician.  In this course, technicians learn how to properly remediate mold, not test for it.  For testing purposes, you must have a 4 year bachelor’s degree in the particular field  as well as specific IH courses. We are trained professionals in remediating your mold concerns and that is where we focus our expertise.

In addition, a company that does both testing and remediation of mold could potentially be perceived to be skewing test results and protocols to serve their own needs (i.e. - to provide their own “passing” remediation status or inflate a remediation protocol to increase the cost of the job).  To avoid this, we not only have another company do the testing, but we also have the customer call in the IH rather than bringing them in ourselves as a subcontractor of our services.  This ensures that the IH is working for the customer’s best interest. At SERVPRO of Mobile Southwest, we make sure our customers can be fully confident they are receiving the most ethical and trustworthy service.

So what do you do if you find Mold?

If you believe that you have a mold problem, contact SERVPRO of Mobile Southwest to evaluate your site and assess the source and extent of the issue. We will provide you with a written assessment of our findings and recommendations of next steps. If the mold issue is severe enough, your next step may be to contact an Industrial Hygienist. The IH will test the area for mold and create a remediation protocol and report with their findings. Adhering to the protocol from the IH, we will properly remediate the site to ensure a passing post-test and return your home or business to a preloss condition.

Wood Floors After Water Damage

6/25/2017 (Permalink)

Blog | SERVPRO Franchise Website Administration

Blog | SERVPRO Franchise Website Administration

If you have water damage at home, call SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile.  Some jobs need expert equipment and materials to remedy and warped hardwood floors are one of those jobs. The following tips can be started before we arrive onsite.

After removing wet items from the area, use a wet vacuum, such as a ShopVac, to remove as much of the water as possible. Go over the entire area multiple times, because even when you can’t see any more water on the floor, the vacuum may be still working to suction the rest of the water out of small cracks and crevices in the floor. Next, clean the surface with a disinfectant floor cleaner that doesn’t foam or suds. Something like Mr. Clean is a good choice.

Next, put a dehumidifier in the affected area and leave it running for at least a full day to further dry out the area. Also, consider putting fans in the room to help with the drying process. If it’s not humid outside or raining, you can open any windows as well.

When the floor is completely dry, check for signs of mold or mildew, and if you see any, treat it with a paste-like mixture of baking soda and water. Do not use bleach on your wood floors. If you can address the water damage problem right away, it’s more likely you’ll be able to salvage them. According to the EPA, mold can start growing in moist areas within 48-72 hours of the first initial contact the floors have with moisture. Time is critical when drying out hardwood floors affected by water and excess moisture.

Seeking out professional help is a good idea when the problem is in a large area or you think it’s not something you can handle yourself. SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile has sophisticated commercial equipment that helps pull moisture from underneath the floorboards for effective drying and allowing moisture to be released, even from the smallest of places. Moreover, if the damage occurs as the result of a natural disaster or some other weather event, your homeowner’s insurance may cover all or part of the damages that occur, so keep that in mind as well.

2/19/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage Who can restore important documents and paperwork for medical records or legal proceedings in Mobile County? We can save your records and paperwork after a disaster.

SERVPRO can!

SERVPRO of Southwest Mobile uses a process called Sublimation when saving your important documents. What we do is first stabilize your records by freezing them and then inventory or cataloging takes place.

The actual process of sublimation is a freeze drying procedure that causes the ice in the frozen documents to convert directly to vapor using a combination of temperature control and pressure. The vapor is then immediately extracted which allows the vapor to bypass the liquid state and ensures your document will be dry.

Most documents will never look brand new again, but the document restoration service SERVPRO provides does produce a usable document that can then be restored or filed and reused in its original capacity.

Sewage Cleanup

1/5/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know that SERVPRO also cleans up sewage backups?

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO technicians will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Christmas Tree Fire

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

One of every three home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems. Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one of every 31 reported home Christmas tree fires results in a death compared to an average of one death per 144 total reported home fires. A heat source too close to the tree causes one in every four of Christmas tree fires. Two out of five home decoration fires are started by candles. One-third of all candle fires start in the bedroom.

item. This allows you to clean a wider variety than ever before, ranging from soft textiles to hard goods. So, for those of you who aren’t experts on washing machine history, lets take a look at the past to give you some perspective on the
future. The first automatic washing machine was introduced by Bendix in 1937. The machine introduced by Bendix was the first to use a drum and agitation to clean. Amazing as it may seem, this has remained the principle of all washing machines up until today. These systems continue to work for families as a means of everyday laundering, but it can’t handle the challenges of the cleaning and restoration industry. The Esporta®washing system is comprised of five main factors that set it apart from traditional cleaning
methods.
- First, the Esporta system utilizes hydraulic pressure as opposed to traditional agitation. This removes both organic and inorganic
compounds and is proven to result in 99% efficacy. This method also reduces wear and tear on the fabrics.
- Secondly, the items are held stationary in each compartment of the machine while water and detergents are forced through,
allowing for cleaning of a wide range of textiles.
-Third, the system uses a four-stage detergent process. This provides for a pH neutral washing environment, preserving the colorfastness
and fabric strength.
- Next, the water is typically stabilized at room temperature, eliminating shrinkage or damage to the fabric.
-Last is the drying process. We are proud to say that we have designed and built a customized low heat drying chamber that
works by gently drawing moisture out. This prevents damage resulting from heat or tumbling in traditional drying.
